We aim to reduce the risk and potential losses from overvalued and volatile markets, and in doing reserve the right to sell any asset class down to zero if it is deemed appropriate by the Investment Committee based on market conditions at the time.

John was a senior stock exchange trader running a 24-hour stock book around the world, making markets in specific stocks and managing large institutional accounts. At Prudential Bache where John worked between 1986 – 1990 one of his responsibilities included option trading and he spent time in New York establishing a market for News Corp on the NY Trading Floor. Since becoming a financial planner John has managed direct share portfolios for many of the firm’s clients and has developed a multimillion-dollar direct share book.

Raffi is the secretary of the IC and is the managing partner for both the Value Investment Partners and Manly Financial Services businesses. Raffi has been working in the industry for over 10 years after completing a Bachelor of Science and making the shift from medical research to financial services. More recently Raffi has completed an MBA majoring in Management Consulting and Change. Raffi’s business administration and management skills, in addition to his analytical/scientific background, assist in the implementation of business strategy and the analysis of emerging disruptive industry and companies.

Chris has been in the financial services industry for 13 years and is the owner and director of Insight Investment Consultants, an investment consulting business set up in 2013 to provide services to financial advisers and licensees. Chris previously worked for CBA where he provided a range of similar services to financial advisers and licensees, as well as internal stakeholders. His research has historically covered managed funds, listed securities (shares, ETFs, hybrids), economics, geopolitics, and asset allocation. Chris’ strong relationships with some of Australia’s largest fund managers affords him unlike insights to how money is moving in markets, while in addition to his own comprehensive understanding of policy and macroeconomics his exposure to thought leaders in the space of wealth management will be invaluable to the committee.

Ken’s background includes economics, econometrics, finance and statistics and he has worked in the local and international equity markets for over 30 years and in various senior management roles. He has held senior roles at Deutsche Bank, James Capel Australia and Tricom. He has also worked in the Australian public service (including the Productivity Commission) and at KPMG. He is a Non-executive Director of Shellfish Culture (oyster spat and oyster farming business), Castray Capital, TasmaNet (ICT company) and is also a non-executive Director of Pure Foods Tasmania which listed on the ASX on 30 April 2020 (ASX code PFT). He holds an honours degree in economics and post graduate qualifications in economics and finance and is also a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FFIN). Ken’s experience and skills are an invaluable resource to VIP.

Phil is a Fellow of Institute of Actuaries of Australia, NZ, UK & USA, and has experience working as a Super Actuary with Aetna Life & Casualty, Actuary Head of Client Services with NMLA, GM Life & Chief Actuary of Munich Re Australia, and MD of Gerling Life Re & Director Gerling Group Aust. Phil’s extensive experience in analysis, research, and investment markets is an invaluable resource to the Investment Committee.

Radek has a strong quant research and IT background and has extensive experience in company analysis, financial modelling, project management and IT project implementation. Radek has held a number of senior positions in medical and financial research areas as well as information technology. His industry achievements include the establishment of start up independent research provider Aegis Equities Research and the development of research and quant infrastructure in both Aegis and Tricom Equities. Radek’s experience, skills, and perspective provide significant value to the Investment Committee.

Benjamin has been Value Investment Partner’s principle trader and investment analyst since graduating from the University of Technology, Sydney in 2014 with a major in Finance and International Business. Ben is responsible for incorporating the Bloomberg Terminal into the firm and bringing it to a level where the Terminal has become an integral part of every facet of the business. Designing research reports and the firms first risk model Ben has been responsible for integral actions that has created the firm that you see today. In recognition to the work Ben has done over the last five years effective of 2021 he will take investment management responsibilities for all direct equity strategies and investments promoted to the role of Portfolio Manager.
Zachary is studying at UNSW in a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Finance and a Bachelor of Economics majoring in Financial Economics. Zachary has been responsible for the creation of the firms current quantitative screening model, risk forecasting model, and valuation model used for the analysis of direct equities and in working with Ben has created the current reporting method for internal assessments of companies and the current models used for tactical asset allocation. During 2020 Zac built Value Investment Partner’s Significant Investor Visa Service which includes three individual model portfolios, created the firms suits of five unique ethical portfolio models, and built the current website among other non-investment related achievements.
Thomas is studying at the University of Technology Sydney in a Bachelor of Economics majoring in Finance. Starting as an intern in October of 2020 he has now started as of the beginning of 2021 his role as Junior Investment Analyst. Thomas is primarily responsible for assisting the Direct Equities Portfolio Manager and Senior Equity Analyst in their investment analysis responsibilities while also generating report materials for the Investment Committee and clients. Thomas’s shorter time with the firm and in the industry is made up by a determination and drive to improve, working closely with senior staff to enhance the operational efficiency of the firm so Value Investment Partners can continue to deliver to its clients.
Having over a decade’s experience in the Australian finance industry working for wholesale boutique Investment funds and stockbroking firms, Chris has a large breadth of expertise including retail and wholesale advice, portfolio management, corporate transactions, asset allocation and operational management of listed fund structures. His role has required forming close working relationships with Fund Managers and service providers around the globe. His roles have also seen him manage all ongoing service providers and running expenses of the Investment advisory business. Chris has knowledge of the financial markets and all related product’s, he has spent time as part of investment panel for Investment managers giving technical and derivative advice for implementation within risk management frameworks and efficient portfolio management schemes primarily, under the Collective Investment schemes rules. Chris’ expertise includes assisting in the setup, launching and ongoing running of both OEIC structures in the UK and EIF funds domiciled in Gibraltar. His role has required forming close working relationships with Fund Managers/Custodians and service providers around the globe.
Accredited in generic and specialist knowledge and skills components for Securities and Managed Investments, James has worked in the financial services industry since 1999, relocating from the UK in 2006. Working for DJ Carmichael Pty Ltd (DJC) from 2007 to 2017, James has held a variety of roles within the Australian stockbroking industry, spending three years as a Risk and Compliance Officer, before transitioning to an advice based role providing services incorporating portfolio management, wealth creation strategies, strategic investment and asset allocation to retail, wholesale and institutional clients. After leaving DJC, James designed a Momentum Strategy, which has formed the basis for the rule-based discretionary growth strategy currently offered to clients of Emerald Capital Australia.
